More than three quarters of recent buyers say they want a home they can move into with little or no work, according to a new industry survey.
The survey of almost 1,100 people who bought a property in the past year found that 23% wanted a fully modernised, turnkey home needing nothing doing, while a further 54% were happy to take on only minor cosmetic updates. Just 3% were actively looking for a full renovation project. The main reasons buyers gave for avoiding a doer-upper were wanting to skip the disruption of building works, the need to move in quickly, and simply not having the time.
So what does this mean if you are thinking of selling? Presentation matters more than ever. You do not need a full refurbishment, but a home that feels fresh, cared for and ready to live in will appeal to the widest pool of buyers and tends to sell more smoothly. Small things make a real difference, from neutral decoration to fixing the little jobs that quietly knock buyer confidence.
At Drivers & Norris, helping sellers get market ready is one of the most valuable conversations we have. If you are weighing up what is worth doing before you list, we are always happy to share what works.
