How to Keep Your Home Cool This Summer

With temperatures soaring across London this summer, many of our older properties can heat up quickly, especially top floor flats and south facing rooms. As your local property experts, we wanted to share a few simple tips to help keep your home comfortable during this heatwave.

Close curtains or blinds during the day to block direct sunlight, particularly on windows that face south or west, as these tend to let in the most heat. In the early morning or evening, when the air outside is cooler, open your windows to let fresh air circulate. Period properties often have great natural ventilation if you know how to use it, so try creating a through draught by opening windows on opposite sides of the property.

It is also worth checking that curtains, blinds or shutters are in good working order before the next heatwave hits, and turning off any appliances that are not in use, as these can generate extra heat around the home. If you have a loft space, keeping the hatch closed during the day can also help prevent warm air from filtering down into upper floors.

If you are a landlord, it is a good time to check in with tenants and make sure they know how to keep their property cool, particularly in older buildings where ventilation can work differently to newer builds. Simple advice can go a long way in helping tenants feel comfortable and looked after.

If you are a landlord or tenant with any concerns about how your property is coping with the heat, our team is always happy to offer advice. Get in touch with your local Drivers & Norris branch today.
