25% of UK adults think that they have lived in a haunted house with 17% even claiming to have seen a ghost for themselves.
Properties located near a 'haunted' location can be up to £75,000 more expensive than the regional average house price, according to new research.
Hammonds Furniture examined average house prices of postcodes located close to ghostly locations such as haunted castles, ghost trails, and areas with reported paranormal activity across the country and compared their findings with regional and national prices to uncover if living close to a spooky site could actually affect the value of a property.
As it turns out, sharing a postcode with a haunted place shouldn’t be a deal breaker for house-hunting Brits. In fact, the study showed that homes near spooky spots are, on average, priced 16% higher than the average home in the same region.
What’s more, the average price of a home located close to paranormal areas is valued at a whopping £475,000 – a hefty £187,000 above the UK average home price (£288,000).
But living near to certain ghostly locations can come with more of a premium than others.
For example, homes near the mysterious Berry Pomeroy Castle in Totnes in Devon are priced at over £200k more than the average Devon home (£323,000) at a hefty £523,000. Legend has it, that two female ghosts are said to haunt the castle daily, the same location where two brothers leapt to their deaths.
Farleigh Hungerford Castle in Somerset is also an area where house prices run higher than the regional average. Those looking to live near the reputedly haunted castle can expect to pay £553,000 for the average home in the same postcode, £192,000 more than the average Somerset home (£361,000).
Fortunately for keen ghost hunters looking to bag a bargain, there are some locations where it’s cheaper to live near a haunted spot when compared to the regional average house price.
With ghost stories dating back to the 17th century, homes near Aston Hall in Birmingham currently sit at £150,000, more than 40% less of the West Midlands average (£256,000).
If witchcraft is more of your thing, look no further than Pendle Hill – said to be home to the “most famous witch trials in English history,” homes in the same postcode as the infamous 17th-century trials in Barley are currently priced at £135,000, 33% below the Lancashire average (£202,000).
Hammonds also surveyed 2,000 UK adults to find out how open-minded Brits are when it comes to the paranormal.
The poll revealed that 43% of Brits believe in ghosts, while 17% claim to have seen one themselves.
Interestingly, 25% of Brits believe that they currently or used to live in a haunted house.
32% of residents in the West Midlands also believe that they currently or used to live in a haunted house. 32% of South-West residents also think that they currently or used to live in, with 31% of Londoners also believing this.
When it comes to the reasons Brits believe their homes may be haunted, hearing noises that can’t be explained came out on top for 38% of Brits.
Top reasons Brits believe their homes are haunted:
1. Mysterious sounds that can’t be explained (38%)?
2. Cold spots and abrupt temperature changes (33%)?
3. Seeing a shadowy figure (28%)?
4. Feeling as though you’re being watched/are not alone (27%)?
5. Lights and electronics turning on and off randomly (24%)
Melissa Denham, interior stylist at?Hammonds Furniture added: “As we head towards spooky season and Halloween, it’s fascinating to learn how many of us may have lived in a haunted home.
“Whilst it’s interesting to see that living close to some of the country's most haunted locations actually may not be a bad thing for your property's value, we were happy to learn that believers and ghost-hunters could still find a good deal living near to certain spooky sites.
“For those of us who aren’t looking to move closer to paranormal activity but still want a thrill this Halloween or half-term break, English Heritage castles or ghost tours hosted in towns and cities across the UK can be a great way to find out the haunted history of more specific locations - let us know on social media if you spot a spirit for yourself!”
